Treeton’s
1st XI had a mixed weekend once again after defeating
a strong Whitley Hall side on the Saturday, they
came unstuck against rivals Wickersley in the
Semi Final of the Stafforce Whitworth Cup a day
later.
Whitley
skipper Alex Fletcher won the toss and elected
to field on what looked a good wicket but suggested
there may have been a bit in it for the bowlers,
which proved to be the case as Treeton were reeling
at 39 for 5. But Paul Fenn and Stuart Guy helped
gain some respectability as the pair added 53
for the sixth
wicket
before Fenn was removed for 22. Guy stayed on
though and was the last batsman
to fall for 55 from 59 balls as he helped to lift
Treeton to a respectable 143 all out.
Whitley
looked in control in their chase despite losing
early wickets and at 73 for 4, things were still
looking positive for the visitors. However, Gary
Montgomery returned to the attack and in tandem
with Ben Ashdown the pair ripped through the middle
and lower order to secure another victory by 50
runs as the half way mark in the season was reached,
Treeton remain undefeated having played and won
all eleven games.
The
following day Treeton crashed out of the Stafforce
Whitworth Cup at the Semi Final stage after defeat
to local rivals Wickersley.
Captain
Chris Cobb won the toss and elected to bowl first
and Treeton were well under par as they struggled
to pull things back after a quick start from the
visitors. Wickersley were going at ten runs an
over for the first five overs, which proved to
be a start which set the tone for the entire innings
as Treeton found things hard going fielding in
the warm heat and Wickersley piled on the runs
as they closed their 45 overs reaching 267 for
9, with Gary Montgomery being the pick of the
bowlers taking 4 for 55 from his nine overs.
Treeton
then lost wickets at regular intervals and despite
a superb 98 from Stephen Foster, the home side
were always second best and looked unlikely to
pull off victory, the middle and lower order struggled
to go in and play their shots with the second
highest scorer making just 15 runs and a frustrating
day came to an end when Treeton were dismissed
for 190, falling 77 runs short of the target.
Treeton’s
2nd XI recorded a terrific victory away to Whitley
Hall’s 2nd XI, batting first the home side
scored 231 for 4 from 46 overs which looked to
be a big ask for Treeton to reach if they were
to come away with victory, but they did just that
as the Barnes’ brothers led the way (Phil
44, George 47) ably assisted by skipper Mick Fairman
who chipped in with 37 as Treeton reached 234
for the loss of six wickets with nine balls to
spare.
The
3rd team were comfortably beaten at their Sheffield
University home by Caribbean. The visitors set
209 for 9 from 44 overs (Ashley Dewhurst 3 for
45 and George Bluff 3 for 38). Treeton were bowled
out for a meagre 93 though and fell 116 runs short
of the target despite Dave Haddock carrying his
bat for 43 runs. |
