Sheffield Collegiate leave empty handed

22nd/23rd August 2009

Treeton 1st XI had another successful weekend seeing off the challenge of league rivals Tickhill before setting up a mouth watering Yorkshire Council Play Off Semi Final match against Methley following victory against Ackworth in the quarter final.

The visitors won the toss and elected to bat first and after scoring five boundaries in the first few overs it was a promising start before wickets began to fall at regular intervals and the Tickhill batsmen were back in the pavilion for 95 all out. Himesh Silva was the pick of the bowlers as he collected his best figures of the season taking 5 for 27 from six overs whilst Ben Ashdown grabbed 3 for 9 from 7.2 overs.

Treeton then stumbled a little in their pursuit by losing three wickets all to LBW's making the total number of LBW's in the game a staggering eight! But skipper Chris Cobb and Stuart Guy (23 not out) saw Treeton home after Ben Ashdown had contributed 30. With Hallam losing to Whitley Hall this meant Treeton were now clear at the top of the Premier Division.

The first team then travelled to Pontefract side Ackworth in the quarter finals of the Yorkshire Council Play Offs the following day with a couple of absentees for Treeton.

Ben Ashdown - 43 against Ackworth

Ben Ashdown stepped up to open with Andy Tomlinson unavailable and he made a gritty 43 at the top of the order but it was an innings which contained a few starts from the batsmen but none were able to push on to make a big score. Treeton lost wickets at regular intervals but they managed to reach 217 for 8 at the close of their 45 overs. Main contributions came from Ashdown (43), Danny Kemp (47) and Stuart Guy (41).

Treeton then struggled to make early inroads into the Ackworth batting line up, but they stuck to their task well despite an under par bowling performance and they dismissed the hosts for 176, 41 runs short of victory with an over to spare. Steve Foster the pick of the bowlers finishing with 5 for 24.

Treeton now play Central Yorkshire League leaders Methley at Washfield Lane on Sunday 30th August in what is sure to be a terrific encounter.

Treetons 2nd XI weren't as fortunate as their 1st XI counterparts as they were defeated twice in the space of two days in their two league outings against Tickhill B and Rossington respectively.

Chasing Tickhill's 219 (Beaumont 5 for 41, Mudhar 5 for 74) for victory on Saturday, Treeton's batsmen fell just 28 runs short of victory despite Nigel Jacobs 63 and George Barnes 52 as the innings closed at 191 for 5.

They were also second best against Rossington a day later despite going close once again having restricted the visitors to 222 for 8 (Mudhar 3 for 53). Treeton struggled to 185 for 6 (Ryan Hardy 45, Craig Beaumont 46*) falling 37 runs short and their chances of promotion were dealt a serious blow.

The third team were well beaten away to Telecom Sports, chasing 269 (George Bluff 3 for 39, Adam Trow 3 for 55) Treeton were dismissed for 148 all out despite a gutsy 59 by Geoff Reed.
