12th September 2009
Whitley Hall were the team who stood in the way of the 1st XI reaching the record points tally in the Premier League as they attempted to beat their own record set in 2003 (124 points) and also go the season with just one defeat against their name. Treeton lost the toss and were invited to bowl first in a game that would see Donovan Koch play his last game for Whitley on a regular basis as he intends to take up a role umpiring on his weekends from next season.
Whitley set a moderate score of 208 for 8 with South African Jaco Castle (66) and Steve Bethel (64 not out) with the main contributions. Sri Lankan Himesh Silva finished his campaign off well collecting 4 for 64 from his 15 overs.
The Treeton openers Steve Foster and Andy Tomlinson carried on where they left off in the league game the week before against Houghton as they combine well yet again to guide Treeton to an emphatic victory with Steve hitting 100 not out and Andy 98 not out to seal a ten wicket win and finish on a high note.
The 2nd XI knew exactly what was expected of them if they were to gain promotion, a full win with bonus points was what was required against Whitley Hall 2nd team.
It was a tense affair but the Treeton bowlers performed well as they restricted Whitley to 177 all out with Craig Beaumont picking up 4 for 39 and Matt Haddock 3 for 38. It was then over to the batsmen but Treeton were struggling at 33 for 2, but a terrific knock of 78 by George Barnes ably assisted by Adam Hardy (20) and Nigel Jacobs (23) saw Treeton home and the seven points they needed to secure promotion to Division One! Congratulations to the 2nd XI on a fantastic effort and a superb season to combine with the success of the 1st XI.
The 3rd team played Richmond for the second time in the space of a week to finish of the season and they would’ve been looking to finish on a high but it wasn’t to be as Richmond came away with the points once again.
Batting first Treeton were reduced to 102 all out, but they didn’t give up without a fight as Richmond reached the target for the loss of seven wickets. The 3rd team were unfortunately relegated from the A Division of the Sheffield League but undoubtedly many of the youngsters used during the season will have learnt a lot from their experience and will be looking to gain promotion next season and an instant return to the A Division.
